Formed Matter

Polyester Silk Organza + Found Objects

Formed by Heat [3D Shibori]

During a workshop with renowned collage and mosaic artist, David Philpot. I began to explore utilizing found objects within my textile work. Within this project, I wrapped a polyester silk organza around found objects and hand-tied them. Once the objects were tied I placed them into a pressure cooker to utilize steam and heat to form the fabric around the objects. The objects left color residue and melted matter in the fabric. This project is projection of the Law of Conservation of Mass, in which matter can be altered, but never created or destroyed. It’s a gentle reminder of the waste streams of over production of products.

The Process

Wave Forms

Bamboo + Wool Roving

Hand and Wet Felted

Utilizing a wet-felted base and needle-felted color applications, I created organic lines and shapes that were decided upon by my intuition and the textures present in the initial wet-formed piece. This piece symbolizes a reconnection to the organic forms present in nature and the go-with-the-flow nature of life. The felt is juxtaposed with a lichen-adorned tree branch to symbolize the grounding effects found in nature.
